Himalayan Foothills Concert Raises Awareness About Dangers of Trafficking

More than 15,000 fans cheered Australian pop star Kate Miller-Heidke and Nepal’s hottest singers at a USAID-supported MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) in Pokhara, a lakeside town nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas.

"Take care. Beware," cautioned Nepali singer Nima Rumba, who also performed at the first MTV EXIT Live in Nepal concert in Kathmandu.

Indian & Nepali Pop Stars Slam Human Trafficking at Kathmandu Concert

They came, they heard, and they took home the message: Don’t be a victim of human trafficking.
More than 20,000 young adults wedged shoulder-to-shoulder inside a football field in Nepal’s capital to hear Indian singer Sunidhi Chauhan and three Nepali artists who performed and warned about the risks of trafficking in the region.

Chart-topping Indian and Australian pop stars Sunidhi Chauhan and Kate Miller-Heidke are joining the “MTV EXIT Live in Nepal” concert tour, which features a slew of national artists performing in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Hetauda, and Dharan this September.

The MTV End Exploitation and Trafficking (MTV EXIT) campaign, sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the MTV Europe Foundation, raises awareness about human trafficking.

All the Nepal concerts are free.  All will highlight the work by local and national NGOs that are educating the public about the risks of exploitation and trafficking.

KATHMANDU  – Indian pop star Sunidhi Chauhan and Nepalese headliners Nima Rumba, Kranti Ale, and Nalina Chitraker will take a stand against human trafficking at a September 5 concert in Kathmandu, the first in a series of free “MTV EXIT Live in Nepal” concerts that will later be staged in Pokhara, Dharan, and Hetaud.

USAID Partnership in China Strives for Eco-Friendly Economic Growth

The Guangdong Environmental Partnership is bringing together the Chinese and U.S. governments, corporations and foundations to increase energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental health in Guangdong, the province known as China’s “factory to the world.”  Partners with USAID include General Electric, Citigroup, and Honeywell, and private foundations such as the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.  The U.S.-based Institute for Sustainable Communities is overseeing the three-year GEP program, which comes at a time when the U.S. and China are emphasizing bilateral engagement on both climate change and global economic recovery.

Regional Tuberculosis Center Opens in Manila

The Asia-Pacific region’s first Model Center focusing on the prevention and control of Multiple-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) was launched recently at the Tropical Disease Foundation in Makati City, Manila.  The regional Model Tuberculosis (TB) Center, in collaboration with the Philippine Department of Health and the ministries of health of other countries, will provide high-quality technical assistance and training for health experts and national tuberculosis programs throughout the Asia-Pacific Region.

The regional Model Tuberculosis Center is the second center of its kind in the world.  It is funded by the U.S. Government through the Agency for International Development’s Regional Development Mission for Asia (USAID/RDMA).
